Improving Aerodynamics to Boost Fuel Economy

Many automakers want to improve the aerodynamics of their vehicles. By improving aerodynamics, it can boost a car’s efficiency and handling. But how can you improve your car’s aerodynamics? At Wheel Enhancement, we have 5 different tips that can help you and your car run better and more efficiently. Our products and services help everyone who is looking to customize and upgrade their car; whether you need custom wheels, tires, or accessories, we are here to help! Here’s what you need to know about aerodynamics, and what you can do to boost your car’s fuel economy.

Emphasis What is Aerodynamics?

Automotive aerodynamics is the airflow around the vehicle. When your vehicle is in motion, air flows around it, as well as into it. The better the vehicle’s aerodynamics, the better its:

  • Fuel efficiency
  • Speed
  • Acceleration

For many, improving aerodynamics can mean reducing drag and wind noise, minimizing noise emission, and preventing undesired lift forces or instability at high speeds. Most modern cars are designed with aerodynamics in mind; problems such as poor airflow around the car (called drag) are usually addressed. However, your car can always use a little improvement.

Emphasis 4 Ways You Can Improve Aerodynamics in Cars

  • Install a Diffuser- The purpose of having a diffuser is to create a higher grip level on the track; this is usually called an aerodynamic grip. The diffuser is installed underneath the rear of the car, depending on the car’s body shape.

  • Add a Front Air Dam- A front dam can redirect air and improve a vehicle’s aerodynamics. It can increase downforce and decrease drag by limiting the amount of air flowing underneath the car.

  • Add a Spoiler or Wing to the Rear- Adding a spoiler or wing on the rear of your car can help airflow when cars are in motion. When air moves over the wing or spoiler, it can create more downforce, which increases traction. This allows for higher cornering speeds and better braking.

  • Reduce Use of Roof Racks- Roof racks and rooftop tents use more energy on cars due to aerodynamic drag. While they are handy by giving you more space, they can drag on fuel consumption and could increase your gasoline bill.
